ExSAR Names Pedro Huertas, MD, PhD as Chief Medical Officer

ExSAR Corporation names Pedro Huertas, MD, PhD, as Chief Medical Officer responsible for overseeing the clinical strategy and development of the Company’s programs associated with orally available drugs for treatment of diseases of misfolded proteins.

Dr. Huertas received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was awarded the Becton Dickinson Research Scholarship and James H. Robinson Memorial Prize in Surgery. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University and also holds a Masters in Business Administration from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Dr. Huertas is the Medical Director of the Benson Henry Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital, and holds appointments at MGH, McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School and MIT.

Most recently, Dr. Huertas was the Chief Development and Strategy Officer at Amicus Therapeutics, Inc, a venture-financed biopharmaceutical company developing pharmacological chaperones for diseases of conformation. Prior to joining Amicus, Dr. Huertas was Chief Medical Officer (Acting) at StemCells, Inc. (NASDAQ: STEM), Chief Medical Officer at Novazyme, Inc., a venture-financed R&D company, and Director of Strategic Development and Medical Director at Genzyme, Inc. (NASDAQ: GENZ).

In addition, Dr. Huertas has served as an expert advisor to venture capital firms, governmental and non-governmental agencies on issues related to biotechnology and uses of biological resources as means of sustainable economic development. Dr. Huertas sits on the Sloan Fellows’ Board of Governors at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, Advisory Board of the Division of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School and MIT, the Advisory Board of the Biomedical Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, and the Advisory Board of the Program on Depression of the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
